Born in a small town in Ontario, Avril Lavigne performed at country-music fairs and sang in her church choir when she was young. Avril left small-town life for the big city and super stardom after catching the attention of Antonio “L.A.” Reid, head honcho at Arista Records. He signed her at 16 and set her up in a studio in New York to start recording. Dissatisfied with New York and with singing other writer's songs, Avril moved to LA where she met Cliff Magness. He helped the skater-punk-rocker find her true voice. Avril’s debut, ""Let Go"", was a hit in the younger pop-dominated music scene. Avril's honest attitude, sassy lyrics, tomboy-ish street style and all-boy backup band appeal to teenagers who are looking for a little substance in their punk-pop music. Her first single, “Complicated,” which Avril says is about “life, people being fake and relationships,"" dominated the charts during the summer of 2002.
